Industrial action looms at Netcare Hospitals (Media Releases)

10 MAY 2010. The Health and Other Services Personnel Trade Union of SA (HOSPERSA) has indicated that its members within the Netcare group will embark on industrial action which will commence as soon as permission has been granted by the relevant local authorities. HOSPERSA, the majority Trade Union representing Nursing and Administrative staff within the Netcare group, has declared a dispute with Netcare management with regard to the 2010 wage negotiations. Noel Desfontaines, General Secretary of HOSPERSA, stated that it is ironic that Netcare, a company rated as one of the top 5 companies and who has recently announced a 30% increase in earnings in the first quarter and who has announced over R1 billion profit in the last financial year, has the audacity to offer its workers an inflation-linked 8.5% increase in response to the workers demand of 12%. While Netcare is generating profits from its normal operations, they are also subjecting their own employees to a uniform sacrifice system whereby members are required to pay for their own Netcare uniforms resulting in Netcare saving over R8 million over a period of 10 years. Desfontaines pointed out that the matter was referred to the CCMA and a certificate was issued stating that the union could embark on industrial action. A ballot was held during May and the majority of HOSPERSA members voted to embark on industrial action. The union is currently consulting with local union structures to determine the format of the strike action. For more information: Noel Desfontaines, General Secretary, CELL : 083 321 4427
