Workers/employees are increasingly being affected by and becoming part of the global economy. At the same time, multinational corporations are becoming more aggressive and unscrupulous in their employment practices. It is therefore important to develop national and international trade union solidarity.

Nationally Hospersa is affiliated to the Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA).

Through its affiliation with Fedusa, Hospersa has access to the International Confederation for Free Trade Unions (ICFTU), which unites workers from 221 national centres in 148 countries, with a total membership of about 156 million members.

Hospersa is also affiliated to the Public Service International (PSI)

PSI is the global union federation for public sector trade unions. PSI represents some 650 affiliated trade unions in 150 countries. Together, these unions organise more than 20 million public sector workers, providing services in central government, health and social care, municipal and community services, and public utilities.

Globalisation

Globalisation brought new trends to the labour market, and the greatest challenge may be the option to work outside one's country of birth. The effect of this is especially evident in the health, education and social sectors, where skills migration and shortages weaken the ability of poorer countries to deliver a great number of services. Strong international solidarity of workers is now more critical than ever in the pursuit of world equality regarding access to decent working conditions.

Hospersa gained much in knowledge, research, networking and resources by its affiliation to PSI, thus strengthening its role as a trade union in the struggle to maintain and develop public services and to lobby governments locally and internationally.
